Edmonds Arts Festival Booth setup

Last weekend I was at the Edmonds Arts Festival and it was a good show. Had great conversations with new customers and also met other artists at the show. The work at this show was just beautiful.

We did have a challenging first day with the rain, but some how did survive it. I did make some changes in my booth setup and I would appreciate comments and suggestions.

Earlier I had a pale yellow background behind my grid wall, but now I changed that to black. I feel the black did make my pieces pop, but I am not sure if the white grid pattern over the black makes it look too busy? Sometimes I feel it makes it look dramatic, so people get encouraged to give the back wall a second look and walk in the booth.

BEFORE

AFTER

This part of the shelving is the same as before. The only change I made here was to add the black material on some of the shelves. I have decided to put it on all shelves next time. Gives the work a good pop and clean look.

This part I am still struggling with. Pedestals! These were cheap cardboard pedestals made from cardboard painted white with white sqaure framing which locked it square. With weights inside them they were stable, but with the rains, cardboard just doesn't cut it. Because of limited space in my car to take stuff to shows I need a more collapsable idea for pedestals. These cardboard pedestals flatten easily for transport but are not strong enough when wet and will just get ruined. Sonotube pedestals take too much room. And with several pieces kept on the pedestals I think it looses focus. So any ideas here are appreciated too.

What if you paint the grid black so that it recedes into the black background and only your work pops?

I too like the black for your work. For pedestals: when I didn't have room to pack pedestals I used the crates that I store work in. They are are the milk-style plastic crates that stack together. I turn them upside down, velcro them to add stability (I also add a bag of clay sometimes to weight them) and place a fabric cover over them. Then I place on top, a wood piece that was cut to fit and painted. I made covers to fit 2, 3 and 4 crates stacked. I used matching fabric that I use behind my grids. If you want photos or more explanation, let me know.

Your set up is looking great! Have fun at the shows!

I would have to agree that the black looks good but the white grid makes it a bit busy, perhaps not a straight black in the grid but a slightly lighter black so it doesn't look to flat. Right now it gives me the impression of kitchen tile work.

I hear that collapsable pedestals made of wood work well for easy transport. They look kinda like collapsable cardboard boxes but are sturdier.

I love your pieces!

Love your work! Nice displays too - I agree w/Suzy - how about spray painting the grids so you don't see the white? I love the black, it does make it pop - but it also makes the white grid pop as well.

Thank you all for your detailed comments.
Hearing you all, I have already spray painted the white grid with a dark gray primer. I was going to paint it black after but I like this look of a dark matt gray better.
I will try this at the next show coming up in July 18th-19th. If I hear about changing it black I will do so.
Thank you all!

I used to use the same grid background to display my work.. I had the fabric on the front of the grid and used curtain hook pins through the fabric on to the grid to hang the work. It worked for me for a long time.
